Always set the selector lever to P position
and set the parking brake:
Only setting the selector lever to the P
position without using the parking brake to
hold the vehicle is dangerous. If P fails to
hold, the vehicle could move and cause an
accident.
&$87,21
¾Shifting into P, N or R while the vehicle is
moving can damage your transaxle.
¾Shifting into a driving gear or reverse
when the engine is running faster than
idle can damage the transaxle.

If the engine is running faster than idle, do
not shift from N or P into a driving gear:
It's dangerous to shift from N or P into a
driving gear when the engine is running
faster than idle. If this is done, the vehicle
could move suddenly, causing an accident
or serious injury.
Do not shift into N when driving the
vehicle:
Shifting into N while driving is dangerous.
Engine braking cannot be applied when
decelerating which could lead to an
accident or serious injury.

Do not apply a strong force to an ultrasonic sensor (rear):
When washing the vehicle, do not spray highly pressurised water against an ultrasonic sensor
(rear), or rub it strongly. In addition, do not hit the rear bumper forcefully when loading and
unloading cargo Otherwise, the sensors may not detect obstructions correctly which could
cause the SCBS R system to not operate normally, or it could operate unnecessarily.
&$87,21
¾When driving
off-road in areas where there is grass or foliage, it is recommended that the
SCBS R system be turned off.
¾Always use tyres of the specified size and the same manufacturer, brand, and tread pattern
on all 4 wheels. In addition, do not use tyres with significantly different wear patterns on the
same vehicle. Otherwise, the SCBS R system may not operate normally.
¾If ice or snow is stuck on the ultrasonic sensors (rear) they may not be able to detect
obstructions correctly depending on the conditions. In such cases, the system may not be
able to perform controls correctly. Always drive carefully and pay attention to the rear of
the vehicle.
NOTE
xThe vehicle posture changes depending on the accelerator pedal, brake pedal and
steering wheel operations, which could make it difficult for the system to recognise an
obstruction, or it could facilitate unnecessary detection. In such cases, the SCBS R may or
may not operate.
xThe SCBS R system will operate under the following conditions.
xThe engine is running.
xThe change lever (manual transaxle vehicle) or the selector lever (automatic transaxle
vehicle) is in the R (reverse) position.
x“Smart City Brake Support Reverse Malfunction” is not displayed in the
multi-information display.
xThe vehicle speed is between about 2 to 8 km/h (2 to 4 mph).
xThe SCBS R is not turned off.
xThe DSC is not malfunctioning.
xThe SCBS R operates using ultrasonic sensors (rear) which detect obstructions at the rear
by emitting ultrasonic waves and then receiving the returning waves reflected off the
obstructions.
xIn the following cases, the ultrasonic sensors (rear) cannot detect obstructions and the
SCBS R may not operate.
xThe height of the obstruction is low such as low walls or trucks with low loading
platforms.
:KHQ'ULYLQJ
L$&7,96(16(

xThe height of the obstruction is high such as trucks with high loading platforms.
xThe obstruction is small.
xThe obstruction is thin such as a signpost.
xThe obstruction is positioned away from the centre of the vehicle.
xThe surface of the obstruction is not pointed vertically relative to the vehicle.
xThe obstruction is soft such as a hanging curtain or snow stuck to a vehicle.
xThe obstruction is shaped irregularly.
xThe obstruction is extremely close.
xIn the following cases, the ultrasonic sensors (rear) cannot detect obstructions correctly
and the SCBS R may not operate.
xSomething is stuck on the bumper near an ultrasonic sensor (rear).
xThe steering wheel is turned sharply, or the brake or accelerator pedal is operated.
xThere is another obstruction near one obstruction.
xDuring inclement weather such as rain, fog and snow.
xHigh or low humidity.
xHigh or low temperatures
xStrong winds.
xThe path of travel is not flat.
xHeavy luggage is loaded in the luggage compartment or on the rear seat.
xObjects such as a wireless aerial, fog light, or illuminated number plate is installed
near an ultrasonic sensor (rear).
xThe orientation of an ultrasonic sensor (rear) has deviated for reasons such as a
collision.
xThe vehicle is affected by other sound waves such as the horn, engine noise, ultrasonic
sensor of another vehicle.
xIn the following cases, an ultrasonic sensor (rear) may detect something as a target
obstruction which could cause the SCBS R system to operate.
xDriving on a steep slope.
xWheel blocks.
xHanging curtains, gate poles such as at toll gates and railroad crossing.
xWhen travelling near objects such as foliage, barriers, vehicles, walls, and fences along
a road.
xWhen driving off-road in areas where there is grass and forage.
xWhen passing through low gates, narrow gates, car washing machines, and tunnels.
xA towing bar is installed or a trailer is connected.
x(Manual transaxle)
If the vehicle is stopped by the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) operation and the clutch
pedal is not depressed, the engine stops.
xWhen the system operates, the user is notified by the multi-information display.

xWhen warnings and messages, such
as a dirty windscreen, related to the
Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) are
being displayed in the
multi-information display.
xAlthough the objects which activate the
system are four-wheeled vehicles, the
radar sensor (front) could detect the
following objects, determine them to be
an obstruction, and operate the SBS
system.
xObjects on the road at the entrance to
a curve (including guardrails and
snow banks).
xA vehicle appears in the opposite lane
while cornering or rounding a curve.
xWhen crossing a narrow bridge.
xWhen passing under a low gate or
through a tunnel or narrow gate.
xWhen entering an underground
parking area.
xMetal objects, bumps, or protruding
objects on the road.
xIf you suddenly come close to a
vehicle ahead.
xWhen driving in areas where there is
high grass or forage.
xTwo-wheeled vehicles such as
motorbikes or bicycles.
xPedestrians or non-metallic objects
such as standing trees.
xWhen the system operates, the user is
notified by the multi-information
display.
xThe SBS warning indication (amber)
turns on when the system has a
malfunction.
Refer to Taking Action on page 7-58.

xDepending on the type of obstruction and the surrounding conditions, the detection range
of a sensor may narrow, or the sensors may not be able to detect obstructions.
xThe system may not operate normally under the following conditions:
xMud, ice, or snow is adhering to the sensor area (Returns to normal operation when
removed).
xThe sensor area is frozen (Returns to normal operation when the ice is thawed).
xThe sensor is covered by a hand.
xThe sensor is excessively shocked.
xThe vehicle is excessively tilted.
xUnder extremely hot or cold weather conditions.
xThe vehicle is driven on bumps, inclines, gravel, or grass covered roads.
xAnything which generates ultrasound is near the vehicle, such as another vehicle's
horn, the engine sound of a motorcycle, the air brake sound of a large-sized vehicle, or
another vehicle's sensors.
xThe vehicle is driven in heavy rain or in road conditions causing water-splash.
xA commercially-available wing pole or an aerial for a radio transmitter is installed to
the vehicle.
xThe vehicle is moving towards a tall or square curbstone.
xAn obstruction is too close to the sensor.
xObstructions under the bumper may not be detected. Obstructions that are lower than the
bumper or thin which may have been initially detected may no longer be detected as the
vehicle approaches more closely to the obstruction.
xThe following types of obstructions may not be detected:
xThin objects such as wire or rope
xThings which absorb sonic waves easily such as cotton or snow
xAngular shaped objects
xVery tall objects, and those which are wide at the top
xSmall, short objects
xAlways have the system inspected at an expert repairer, we recommend an Authorised
Mazda Repairer if any shock is applied to the bumpers, even in a minor accident. If the
sensors are deviated, they cannot detect obstructions.
xThe system may have a malfunction if the beep does not operate or the indicator light
does not illuminate when the park assist sensors switch is turned on. Consult an expert
repairer, we recommend an Authorised Mazda Repairer.
